A major frustration about the Apple TV 4 K is about to be history.....One of the biggest upgrades to tvOS 14 is one which was not mentioned by Apple during today's WWDC presentation. The news that YouTube content will finally be viewed in 4 K starting with tvOS 14 is hidden on the preview page for the update (coming this fall).YouTube's app currently has a maximum 1080p resolution on Apple's 4 K streaming box — even for UHD videos. That's because Apple has so far refused to support the 4 K library of YouTube's VP9 codec which is the foundation.

The text on the website of Apple does specify that this applies to "the latest YouTube videos," so on the side of YouTube it could be a change. The company could now use the AV1 codec as it began to do on Android TV, but that's not yet verified.Apple makes no specific mention of 4 K YouTube as part of the macOS Big Sur update coming to Safari.

Other new features of tvOS 14 include expanded image-in-picture support, and deeper integration of HomeKit for smart home accessories.
