"Fleets," the Twitter take on stories in the style of Snapchat / Instagram, has just become available in India. The feature is slowly rolling out around the world; the fleets came to Italy last month after initially launching in Brazil.

"India is important to Twitter as it is one of our world's largest and fastest-growing audience markets," said India managing director Manish Maheshwari in a statement on Twitter. "We 're excited to bring the Fleets project to India and make this new product one of the first three countries in the world to experience."

"We'll learn from the India test how introducing a new conversation mode changes the way Indians communicate on Twitter. It'll also be interesting to see if it further amplifies the usage diversity by allowing people to share what they think in a light-touch and light-hearted way.

It's not clear when a worldwide release will be issued by Twitter to fleets. These days, the story format is omnipresent in social media apps, having been tried by services as disparate as YouTube, Skype, and WhatsApp; ephemeral posting may be a more natural fit for Twitter, but the company was slow to adopt it.
